3 Tips to Identity Theft Protection

This is a guest article submitted to IdentityTheftSecrets with the same information (slightly re-hashed and added to) about identity theft that the federal trade commission put out in 2003, and is the same information we have been talking about since then.  The article was submitted by a company that lets you submit phone numbers that have been harrassing you.

The reason we are posting this content again is because the information is still relevant.  Side note: if you are a legitimate writer who can actually create unique, insightful, and interesting content, we would like to talk to you as we are looking for good content from an independent person who doesn’t need a boss watching over them every minute of the day.  If you are that person, please contact us using the form on this site.  Article follows…

According to the FBI, identity theft is one of America’s fastest growing problems. Over ten million Americans become the victims of identity theft yearly. Identity theft can occur when criminals steal information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, bank account numbers and other personal information.

Awareness is the most important factor in identity theft prevention. Once awareness develops, you can take extra precautions to protect yourself.

How do criminals steal their victims’ identities?

  1. Mail Theft – Your mailbox is a prime target for criminals. Unsolicited offers like pre-approved credit cards or insurance offers may seem like trash to you, but they are bait for criminals. You can opt out of pre-screened offers by calling 888-5OPT-OUT.If you will be away from your mailbox for an extended period of time, appoint a trusted friend or family member to gather your mail while you are away or cancel your mail delivery. When sending out bill payments, avoid writing your full credit card number on checks and never send your social security number through the mail.Shred all mail that includes personal information before you discard it. Criminals will rummage through trash to find credit card statements, receipts, utility bills or pre-screened credit offers or any piece of mail that contains personal data.
  2. Phishing – Beware of suspect emails and never click on links without verifying the identity of the sender. Criminals will send you to a website and ask you for personal information while posing as your bank or another seemingly legitimate organization. If you are at all suspicious, contact the organization directly and ask if they sent an email with a link. Banks and other organizations will never ask you for personal information via email or over the phone.
  3. Robbery and Skimming – Stolen wallets and ATM skimming are also common identity theft occurrences. Skimming refers to the crime of retrieving ATM card information by installing a device on an ATM. The devices are difficult to spot, but most involve a card swipe because they are the easiest to skim. Banks are now taking precautions and converting their swipe interfaces to manual inserts so the reader head is located on the inside of the machine which is difficult for criminals to manipulate. When using the ATM, look over your shoulder also to ensure no one is watching you input your password. Try to use card insert ATMs instead of those with card swipes, if possible.

Prevention and awareness are the best deterrents to identity theft. A few extra measures on your part can make a world of difference and protect you from one of the biggest crimes in the nation.

Internet Privacy Eraser

Perhaps the best Privacy Eraser Coupon we’ve ever seen
Order now and receive 40% off the regular price!

As we’ve talked about a lot on this website, if you’re looking for a way to completely be untrackable while surfing the net, you should look into a VPN.

However, if you just want to delete your Internet browsing history with some kind of privacy eraser, this post (and best coupon we’ve found) is for you.

In case you don’t know, your computer tracks everything you do on the Internet. If you’re looking for a way to hide or erase everything you’ve done from your computer’s records, looking into a privacy eraser is a good idea.

Of course, you can spend hours learning all the places where Windows stores the files of your temporary browsing history on your computer. (Many of these files aren’t so temporary as you might hope. The files don’t erase themselves, as temporary files should.) You can manually delete everything stored on your computer from what you do on the Internet. But remember, you have to find where the cookies are stored, where the temp files are stored, where the images and videos are stored, and where any executables or other active file types are stored.

Alternatively, you can use a privacy eraser to make sure all the things you do on the Internet remain private (hidden and ultimately erased) from other people who also use the same computer.

This doesn’t have to only be used for nefarious or potentially morally objectionable reasons either. While we recommend you talk with your spouse if you want to look at porn or sexual related material on the computer, there are other reasons you might want a privacy eraser.

Let’s say you are shopping for your wife’s birthday. Every image you see online of that perfect diamond tennis bracelet is stored on your computer somewhere.

If you forget to delete the temp files after looking, that image may still be on your computer, even when you’re not connected to the internet.

If she goes digging around looking for a lost file one day, she might just find the surprise you don’t want her to find.

That’s one small example of a great way in which a privacy eraser can be used to erase your Internet browsing history. Extrapolate the example, and you can see how a privacy eraser can be a very good thing to have on your personal or work PC.

Parallels Desktop Coupon

Parallels Desktop Coupon and trial download page

Open disclaimer: We’re pretty sold on how cool Parallels Desktop actually is. We’ve already written on this site highlighting all the things the company’s software allows you to do.

So, we won’t be going into that too much today. The purpose of this short post is just to let you know that through the link below, you can get a Parallels Desktop coupon (and/or free trial download).

In case you missed our write-ups from the past month or so, here’s a brief overview.

Parallels is a company which works in the virtualization space.

Virtualization basically means creating virtual environments in which multiple operating systems and technologies can work simultaneously, and interact with one another.

Parallels was founded at the end of 1999, and is currently serving more than 10 Million Users in 125 Countries.

Parallels is at the top in the virtualization space with Parallels Desktop for Mac, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers (server level controls), and Parallels Plesk Panel (again, control at the server level).

Parallels has over 55 patents either issued or pending and has developed partnerships with many of the world’s largest companies including AMD, Dell, Microsoft, Apple, and IBM.

Some of the reviews of Parallels Desktop for Mac talk about how users really like the Convergence view.

In the Convergence view, you can see Windows apps in the Mac toolbar, and then the applications (which are Windows based) just show as would any program in the Mac User Interface. People generally are pleased with he performance of the virtual machine especially when only using it for basic functions like presentations and Word Processing. Some people who are using it for intensive video rendering have reported some slowdown, but overall people seem quite pleased with the Parallels performance.

As with almost all software, the area for improvement with Parallels is (apparently) with customer service. While most people agree that Parallels support is polite and helpful in extending things like free trials, some people have complained that the support people couldn’t answer some rather complex challenges they were facing (usually dealing with graphics rendering issues or challenges with Windows 64 bit versions).

Overall, while not ecstatic about the support, people seem pretty satisfied with the overall helpfulness of Parallels’ support staff.

You get to the level that Parallels is at by creating good solutions that people enjoy using. Such is the case with the Parallels applications we’ve seen.

VMware Training for vSphere: Manage v4

Hey Guys,
I have seen your write-ups about VMWare Workstation. Do you know if there is online VMWare training or if there are other classes I can get for VMWare Sphere? Specifically, I’m looking for a training for VMWare Sphere V4, and would like to learn how to manage the various aspects of V4.
Ankit Prawan

Hey Ankit,

The link below here will take you directly to the VMWare Sphere Training.

I’m assuming from your name that you are located in India. One of the nice things about the training we know of for VMWare Sphere is that it is available online from anywhere in the world. While the training is a bit expensive, it will cover pretty much everything you could want to know about VMWare, including installation and configuration, as well as ongoing management of VMWare tools.

If you’re job seeking in IT, this training gives you a great leg up on those without it, and if you’re already in a job using VMWare, this gives you a great way to make sure you know what you’re doing with your company’s IT Environment.

If you’re asking about Sphere, you probably are already familiar with it’s features, so we’ll just stick to telling you about the training.

It’s called “Install, Configure, Manage v4” Sphere

It is an in-depth training course which talks about and lets you work through the steps of installing, configuring, and managing VMware Sphere.

Sphere includes VMware vCenter Server and VMware ESXi/ESX.

If you are a sysadmin, engineer, or if you are responsible for ESXi, ESX, and/or vCenter Server, the four day training will be great for you.

One of the best parts about this training is that it can be taken online live. (You can also take the course in person in the classroom setting if you are interested.)

It is also possible, once you have gone through the training, to take the VMWare Certified Professional test, which gives you the additional credentialing and proof of your knowledge base whether you are working as an employee or contractor.

Again, here is the link to go directly to the training on the VMWare site. If you’re in the IT field and wanting to work in virtualized environments, this is a training you should have.

iVPN Discount and Review

Need a great VPN?
Check out the iVPN discount before/after the review below.

A VPN is a way for you to connect to the Internet in a secure, non-trackable way. And there are lots of potential uses for a VPN beyond security.

However, there are many parties who have an interest in watching what you do online. Blocking their access can be accomplished through a VPN Service quite easily.

If you are a privacy minded person, you likely are already aware of all the ways in which your Internet activity is monitored. And if you are looking to have a good level of control over what’s happening with the information you’re sharing while you’re on the Internet, you should look into a VPN.

Outside of privacy issues, why else might someone want a VPN? Continue reading iVPN Discount and Review
