In an age of wireless technologies, shrinking sizes, and more than ever fear about people spying on us, it’s important to realize that while hidden cameras can be placed anywhere and so should be some cause for concern, there are also many legitimate reasons for hidden cameras.

By asking yourself if you have a legitimate reason, you will avoid any guilt (caused sometimes) from the stories we all too often hear about.  These stories are usually something along the lines of a neighbor using a hidden camera to spy on someone while they are getting dressed, showering, etc.

If you do want a hidden camera for a good reason, there are many types to choose from.  Generally speaking, hidden cameras fall into three categories.

  • Wired hidden cameras
  • Wireless hidden cameras
  • Self-contained hidden cameras

Wired cameras are so 1980’s.  Actually, that’s not true.  There are many good reasons for wired cameras.  But if you’re wanting to install just 1 camera to protect your house or watch the nanny, and you don’t want to run extra cables through your house, this isn’t your best option.

Self-contained hidden cameras hold the camera and some type of media to record on.  The media today is generally an SD memory card.  This can be placed in anything – from something as benign as a teddy bear to something more large and unassuming (check out this wireless camera rock). To view the recording, just remove the memory card out of the unit and place it into your computer for viewing.  Self-contained wireless cameras are usually the easiest to set up.  We’ll talk more about self-contained hidden cameras at some point soon.

However, in part 2 of this article, we will go more in-depth will focus on the wireless hidden camera option.

With a wireless camera, the hidden camera and a small transmitter are placed into whatever you want them placed into.  The transmitter sends a signal wirelessly to a receiver. You can then view what’s coming to the receiver wirelessly on a TV, computer monitor, or have it save to a recording device for later retrieval/playback.
