New video sneak peek at ‘The Fifth Estate’

We talk in here a great deal about online security and what can happen with that security is breached. Both good and bad things can happen. We have also heard a great deal in the media about “The Fifth Estate.” Not exactly a new concept, but one which is gaining in momentum:

***The Fifth Estate refers to citizen journalism. “Fifth Estate” is used to describe media outlets (including the blogosphere) that see themselves in opposition to mainstream media (the official press), any class or group in society other than the clergy (First Estate), the nobility (Second Estate), the commoners (Third Estate) and the press (Fourth Estate). It has been used to describe civil society, the poor or the proletariat.***

We have heard a great deal about WikiLeaks, which has forever changed the way people view information and data, both the release of it as well as the hiding it.  “The Fifth Estate” is a new thriller movie which is based on the real events.

Official description . . . “WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes. Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?”

I know I’m excited to see this side of the story and where actions like these may lead.

Digital Parenting: The Essential Guide

I watched in amazement as my 7 year old daughter performed a research for a homework project. Where did her research come from? Not the library at school but from a library of information across the Internet. She’s SEVEN! Did I mention that she plans to provide your report on an inventor to her second grade classroom as a PowerPoint presentation?

As children become even more computer conscious, they may not necessarily become security savvy. That’s where parents have to step in. We need to know what’s going on the digital world, just as much as we need to know what’s going on with their sports teams and in their classrooms.

Father of McAfee Antivirus become “person of interest” in Belize

Many of you reading this article right now may have the popular McAfee Antivirus Security System on your computer.  John McAfee,  father of this online security program and pioneer in anti-virus protection, is now under investigation in Belize for the alleged murder of Gregory Faull, an American expatriate and builder from California.

Faull is a neighbor of the now reclusive John McAfee, was found with a gunshot wound to the head, in a pool of blood.  Faull was found in his home on Ambergris Bay, and the police are searching for McAfee as a person of interest.  Although there were no signs of forced entry, Faull’s computer and phone were missing.   “We are looking for him in connection with the murder,” says Robinson, who adds that another suspect is currently in custody – although no charges have been filed yet,” says Vienne Robinson, assistant superintendent of the Belize’s San Pedro police department, when he spoke to Fox News.

This is not McAfee’s first time to be a person of interest with the Belize government.   Faull had called the local authorities regarding McAfee after disputes with him involving guns shots.  The GSU (a special forces and SWAT type team) raided his home to find  $20,000 in cash, a lab stocked with chemistry equipment, seven pump-action shotguns, one single-action shotgun, two 9-mm. pistols, 270 shotgun cartridges, 30 9-mm. pistol rounds, and twenty .38 rounds.  None of which is illegal in Belize.  Apparently neither is a 67 year old man with a 17 year old girlfriend who was seen leaving his bedroom with him as the raid occurred.   Gimzodo, reported last week on McAffee’s purportedly bizarre activities in Belize, stating that his behavior “has become increasingly erratic, and by his own admission he had begun associating with some of the most notorious gangsters in Belize.” Continue reading Father of McAfee Antivirus become “person of interest” in Belize

Pinnacle Studio: Download for Windows 7

Pinnacle Studio for Windows 7 + Promo Code
$139 off when downloading Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Bundle for Windows 7

Using Pinnacle Studio on Windows 7 is a nice experience. While using Pinnacle Studio with Vista, users often found that the processes of Pinnacle Studio were slow or clunky, but it appears that was more a problem of Windows Vista thank Pinnacle Studio.

With Windows 7, Pinnacle Studio seems to work smoothly, run quickly, and create excellent output videos in an easy way, as it always has.

In order to use Pinnacle Studio with your Windows 7 machine, here’s what you should have as a minimum (if you don’t know what any of this is, but you want to get a computer that will work well with Pinnacle Studio, you can print this list or email it to a geeky friend who can help you):

  • Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon 1.8 GHz (2.4 GHz or higher recommended)
  • Intel Core2 Duo 2.4 GHz required for AVCHD
  • Intel Core2 Quad 2.66 GHz or Intel Core i7 required for AVCHD 1920
  • 1 GB system memory, (but they require that you have 2 GB if you want to do anything with AVCHD
  • A graphics card that is compatible with directX and has 64 MB on board (though you’ll do better with 128 MB or higher. If you want to do HD video or AVCHD, you’ll want 256 or better)
  • A sound card that is compatible with DirectX 9 or newer
  • 3.2 GB of disk space (Remember when 3.2 GB seemed like a lot of space? Now it’s required disk space by just one program, and you can’t even buy a 20 GB hard drive because it’s too small.)
  • A DVD-ROM drive so that you can install Pinnacle Studio from the CD
  • A USB 2.0 port is also ideal

Optional things you can put on your machine to make the performance of Pinnacle Studio inside of Windows 7 even better include: a CD burner so that you can make Video CDs (or Super Video CDs, which are also known as S-VCDs), a DVD burner if you want to create DVDs or AVCHD* discs, and a great sound card with the ability to output surround sound.

So what can you do with Pinnacle Studio on your Windows 7 machine?

You have lots of options, but they include the ability to

  • Import videos and photos from lots of different media and in lots of different formats.
  • Add all kinds of “fun” ness to your video including adding animations and sounds
  • You can turn your original video into a stop-motion video, which creates really fun resulting videos
  • Automatically fix shaky camera syndrome
  • Use preset templates which let you save LOTS of time in creating your videos
  • Lots lots more.

We’re enjoying our trial of Pinnacle Studio on our Windows 7 box and think that you will too.

Other reviews you did hav said good stuff about Bootstrap Softwares n Security. Where I can get a Botostrap free download for MediaWidget?

Yes, we do get emails like this at IdentityTheftSecrets.

(But at least from this one we can understand what’s being asked.)

In this case, this visitor would like to know where he/she can get a free download of Bootstrap’s Media Widget Software.

Rather than just providing you a link, we’d like to review the software and let you know what we liked and thought could be improved (after reviewing Bootstrap MediaWidget).

And despite what lots of scammy sites say about the software being free, since we don’t know where you can get a free download (other than a trial download), we’ve just given you a way to go directly to the trial download.

MediaWidget is a software which will transfer anything that’s currently on your iPod into your PC. This lets iTunes find the media and display it for you in a way you can use. Continue reading Bootstrap MediaWidget Review: MediaWidget Free Download?

Cell Phone Unlocks Car Doors? True or False? Or not that far away?

You may have seen somewhere on the Internet, received an email message or be told by a helpful friend that should you leave your keys in your car or lock yourself out that there is a quick and easy way to enter your car using your cell phone.  The message online may be something like this;

“Use your cell phone to call someone who has access to your car remote. Hold your cell phone about a foot from the car door and have the person who you called on the phone put your remote near the phone (the one they are using) and push the “unlock” button. Your car door will unlock.”

While this may sound like a handy way to get back into your car quickly and easily (better than banging your cell phone in frustration against your car window for example) it’s actually not true.  In simple terms, the type of signal used to open your car using your Remote Key Entry is not able to be transmitted through a cell phone.  Rumors abound on the internet that in some cases it worked on this person or that person’s car, however, they didn’t realize that they remote devices were still in range of their car.  In most cars the signal can be transmitted in newer cars for up to 300 feet.

Check out this Discovery Channel test drive!

But don’t just take the experts word for it.  After trying it myself on several different makes and models, using different cell phone carriers none of the cars I tried to “test drive” never even got running.  So my suggestion, carry an extra key.

So, if you lock your car keys out it looks like you have to depend on the old fashioned method of getting in by calling for help from a friend, neighbor, a car dealership and sometimes AAA can help, depending on the type of car and keyless entry that you have.

The good news is; that sometime in the future your cell phone may be able to do this.  Right now OnStar has an app available. This is a Google enhanced app that can start your car, turn on the lights or activate the horn as well as remind you of general maintenance your car may need using your iPhone, Droid, or BlackBerry Storm.  Soon OnStar will have this application available to new 2011 Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC vehicles.  Now if I could just find my cell phone!
